Observations of the Fourth

In years past, Fourth of July celebrations were filled with family gatherings, church picnics, swimming, boating, lots of food. But when the Fourth falls on a weekday, the celebrations are a little more reserved. Most of my day was spent sleeping in. It was glorious. I don’t really have a day where I can sleep in so I soaked up this opportunity and relished every lazy moment of it. When I did get the desire (translation: when guilt of my time in bed overtook me) I transplanted myself to the recliner in front of the television.

The first notable thing I saw on television is a soap opera wherein one of the story lines is a mermaid who is trying to become human by seducing a really stupid guy. Immediately I started singing to the empty room "Under the sea, under the sea, darling its better down where its wetter, under the sea". Sadly no one was there to appreciate the absurdity of this moment. Later on I watched the space shuttle take off without incident; I sat there being glad that my brother did not become an astronaut because I was nervous enough for the complete strangers on board. I can’t imagine what those family members go through. That afternoon hubby returned home from his adventures at the farm to assist me with cleaning the house and preparing for our evening picnic with friends (yes, I’ll keep him). While we were busy dusting, sweeping, scrubbing we were momentarily averted by the news of the nasty North Korean imbeciles that launched missiles. In a strange way, that was a strong reminder for me of what this holiday is all about - our freedom and the cost of it. We then headed out to our picnic (yes, a potluck!). It was actually quite good. I was very pleased with the food selection and quality. After the picnic we hung out for the fireworks display. It really is much much much more fun to watch fireworks with a whole bunch of little kids (ages 2 - 4). They are absolutely fascinated by each and every one. They giggle and laugh all the way through. I would have sat there watching the show completely emotionless had it not been for these little ones and their reactions. Instead Brian and I sat there and giggled at their reactions for a solid 25 minutes.

All in all, we had a great holiday.
