Imagine for a moment, you are a 17 year old male. There is a fresh powdery blanket of snow when you wake up this morning. You get in your car with your friend and head off to school. You drive like a goofball, swerving ever so slightly here and there, giggling with glee as the back end of your car slowly and gracefully slides one way and then the other. Your buddy laughs. You approach a stop sign at a t-intersection with a decent amount of cross traffic. Apparently, this is where any logic you have LEAVES you. After all, it doesn’t take extra time to stop on slick, snowy roads. You live in Iowa. You have driven on these roads ever since you got behind the wheel. You’ve never even so much as gone in the ditch. You, as far as winter-weather-related-incidents are concerned, are invincible.
I saw him approaching. I had a moment of decision - do I wait for him or do I just go? By the grace of God I decided to wait. I watched as he drove past me and made a dumb face at me. I watched as he purposefully fishtailed on a very straight road. I watched as he slid through the stop sign and smashed into the back of that poor girl’s car. Everyone appears to be fine. They got out and walked around looking at the damage. I can only hope he as ashamed of himself as he should be. I plan on calling the police and reporting what I saw. But more than that I hope this idiot has figured out that CARS ARE NOT TOYS! They are large pieces of metal and glass that hurtle through the air at alarming speeds with very little control left in our hands especially dependent upon environmental factors. Its not funny to be so stupid that you think you having fun in your 1200 pound weapon is more important than your life - and certainly if you think it is funny then it is not more important than your victim’s life. Grow up.
I wanted to give that speech. But I refrained. I simply sat there looking at him, his car, his bumper on the ground, the girl who was walking around her car - hands shaking wondering where kids have learned how to be so stupid. Stupidity of this level is not accidental - it is taught.
And for those of you keeping track ~coughJasoncough~ I had pizza twice in the last 5 days. I didn’t pay for it. I no longer expect the establishment to give me free pizza - now I guess I just expect other people to pay for it for me. I must look malnourished. Shush. You may all keep your comments to yourselves.
