So the big story in Pella yesterday was that Preston from Extreme Home Makeover was here - touring Pella Corporation. This really has no effect upon my life, but it was interesting. I didn't think much of it really. I don't work there so I wasn't going to see the guy.
I was on my way to the post office, a 5:00 ritual for me. I was sitting at the four way stop.
Now, before I go any further, you need to know something about me and four-way stops. They are the bane of my existence. I crave a world of order and complete organization. I need structure. Rules. Clearly marked indications of when to go and when not to go. Four-way stops throw all of these essentially out the window. Yes, you must stop. Yes there is a prescribed order of who goes next. The problem is, you have to rely on other people to abide by these same rules. On occasion, two of you go at the same time, then stop, then both go again, then stop, then you both wave each other through, etc. Chaotic stalemate.
Anyway, I am sitting at the four-way stop and I wait patiently for the truck to my left. After he has cleared the way, it is my turn, so I creep forward. Halfway through the intersection this giant limo appears at my left - feet from my car. There must be some limo traffic laws that I have not read because this man clearly thought he had the right of way. I know for a F A C T that he indeed did not. I continued on my path while he looked at me as though I was some very stupid small town driver. Maybe that kind of insubordinate behavior is acceptable in large cities - wherever he came from, but this is certainly not how people in small town America behave.
It was only after I had parked and gotten out of my car that I began to wonder WHO that was? Enormous long stretch white limo, coming from Pella Corp., headed out of town. Light bulb moment. It was Preston!
This is my close encounter with the famous. Pathetic, I know. But it is amusing to think what would have happened if mean limo driver dude had hit me. What a scene there would have been. What chaos would have ensued. And if that had happened I would have been left right where I am now - my loathing of four-way stops further cemented.
